Melbourne is the capital city of the State of Victoria. Victoria is the second largest State in Australia. Located in the south-eastern area of mainland Australia, Melbourne is a fantastic place to live and study.
The City itself is very spread out. We have one of the highest proportions of parklands to city ratios in the World. And some of our parklands are beautiful. Our population density is quite low making Melbourne less crowded than many other cities in the world. Melbourne City itself is a centre for cultural and sporting attractions. And Melbourne is built on the Yarra River.
Melbourne has been found to be one of the World’s Most Liveable Cities by The Economists Intelligence Unit five years in a row. And there’s good reasons why our city is considered to be such a good place to live. With mountains, beaches, alpine areas and fabulous tourist attractions not far away, Melbourne’s environment is fantastic.

NMGC is concerned for the welfare of all of its students. Ensuring each student has appropriate accommodation while studying with the College is an important part of our welfare obligations.
There are three options to be considered with respect to accommodation arrangements
Some of our students live with their parents while studying with NMGC. In this case the parents are responsible for ensuring the arrangements are appropriate. Parents must have a student guardian visa. Where this arrangement applies, NMGC reserve the right to inspect the relevant premises at least twice a year to check the appropriateness of the living arrangements.
Some of our students live with a Department of Home Affairs approved relative. In this case, NMGC act to ensure the relative/guardian is over the age of 21 and that the accommodation provided is appropriate. Where this arrangement applies, NMGC reserve the right to inspect the relevant premises at least twice a year to check the appropriateness of the living arrangements.
Some of our students require Homestay Accommodation for the duration of their studies with NMGC. In this case the College has relationships with relevant homestay providers who can assist us to provide your child with accommodation. NMGC vet each and every homestay parent and facility to ensure they are suitable. NMGC also inspect each premises at least twice a year to check its appropriateness (in the case of underage students).
We encourage parents of students interested in making use of homestay arrangements to provide us with as much information as possible to ensure we provide the most suitable homestay experience we can. We strive to place our students within 45-50 minutes travel distance to our College. We cannot guarantee the location of students studying with us.
We recommend homestay arrangements for all students studying away from home. We find that a lot of students over the age of 18 struggle in their studies when they move from a homestay arrangement to living on their own or with friends. Our Business Development Officers will be able to assist you if you need more information about Homestay arrangements.
NMGC require all adults in a homestay provided to one of our underage students to have a valid and up-to-date Working With Children’s Card. If any adult living in the house does not have a valid WWC card, the homestay will not be approved.
North Melbourne Grammar College (NMGC) has academic entry requirements. These are mapped out in the VCEDOC30001 NMGC Enrolment Handbook.
If an international student is coming to Australia with children:
– Please note that in Australia it is Law that all school aged children go to school
– It may be possible that any dependent children will be charged School Fees by a relevant Education Provider while they are living in Australia
The College must comply with the ESOS Framework (for engagement with International Students). For further information on the ESOS Framework and living in Australia as an International Student please click on the link below: ESOS Framework Factsheet.
Our Business Development Officers (BDOs) can provide you with more information on living options in Australia.
NMGC has English Language requirements for all students. In the case of international students, we would prefer students were at an overall IELTS equivalent of around 5.0. Our minimum requirement in 4.5. More information on our English Language Requirements can be found at VCEDOC30001 NMGC Enrolment Handbook.
