Subject Offerings

Subject Offerings

NMGC has developed a unique concept in the provision of educational services to students. It sets us apart, and provides our students with the career-focus they desire.

Our intention is to develop a series of sub-schools dedicated to providing educational services focused on specific vocational areas. This will mean students can come to NMGC to specialise in their chosen vocational area through their VCE years and do it with like minded people all aspiring to further their studies in the chosen field.

What subjects are taught?

In all of our sub-Schools, students will be expected to complete at least one study of English. In many of the pathways students will be required to complete at least one study of Maths. Both subjects are incredibly important to the majority of pathways. In some cases, students will be required to attain particular levels in these subjects as pre-requisites for entry into certain University level courses.

Elective VCE subjects focusing on the vocational pathway are offered in every one of our sub-Schools. These are designed to cater to the specific interests of the students within the sub-school. Each sub-School will run a subject based on the needs of students in the sub-school. These subjects might include certified courses (like units from Certificate IV in Business) and short courses and seminars that help develop a student’s understanding of their chosen field of study (for example, talks from a Barrister about life as a Barrister).

It is possible for students to do subjects from other sub-Schools (eg a student enrolled in our Business course may wish to do VCE Visual Communication and Design). However, this needs to be discussed as part of the enrolment process.

As at all schools, NMGC can only provide courses where enough students wish to take them. NMGC can make no guarantees about what subjects will be offered from year to year.

We understand that different students achieve at different levels, but we will make our students accountable for their actions. Where we feel students are under-performing or under-achieving, we will strive to place mechanisms in their path to assist or encourage them to achieve their goal.

Our Academic Progress processes strive to ensure only students who have met our standards move on to the next Year Level. Progression to the next Year Level is not a given at NMGC. Where students do not meet our standards – particularly where the reasons are behavioural – and despite repeated attempts to assist them to do so, there will be repercussions.

Upon the successful completion of their studies, our students will be awarded the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). This internationally recognized certificate provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university, apprenticeships or TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and to employment.

The Graduation Guarantee

We are passionate about helping our students access their preferred vocational pathway (wherever possible). In some of our sub-schools, we can guarantee students who successfully complete their VCE with us will be provided with a place in one of our parent company’s (SCEI) post school (TAFE-level) courses. This means some of our students can pursue their goals knowing they have a place in a tertiary institution if they do not achieve their goals.

The aim is to prepare our students for the move to university, TAFE or employment and provide them with lifelong skills to help manage future career transitions.

To cross from secondary to tertiary, the pathway is simple here at NMGC. Study in any level, reflect on your interests and see how they allign to career options In year 10 we will assist in providing information about your chosen fields, helping to prepare your course research and tertiary applications in year 11.

We also provide a qualified career counselling service, where students may book and appointment and togehter with their parents they can discuss indivudual pathways and other course/career issues.

We will also make annual trips to see some of the Universities close to us and will make use of the facilities and expertise of our parent Institute – Southern Cross Education Institute.

Subject Selection

The selection of studies is the responsibility of the student; so you will need to think carefully of what your future goals are. The College’s staff will discuss subject selection with you and assist wherever possible. Once you have made your selection, fill in the study selection form and hand it to an administration/enrolment officer.
